Obituary for Jesse Spain

Jesse Carlton Spain, resident of Manhattan, passed away on October 11th, 2017. He was 80 years old. Born and raised in Montclair to the late James and Dorothy Spain, he was the youngest of seven siblings.



He attended Seton Hall University for two years. Realizing that his true passion was the emerging field of television broadcasting, he transferred to the R.C.A. Institutes. Upon graduation he began a long successful career in television broadcasting that spanned over 50 years. This career included becoming a Technical Director for the New York Public Broadcasting Service. Later in his career, he was a broadcast engineer for CBS Corporation, where he retired after 35 years of distinguished service.



Jesse was a real Renaissance man. His interests included photography, jazz music, art, gourmet food, and wine. Over his lifetime, he built an extensive library upwards of 5,000, that included rare and collectible books.



He leaves his wife, Joan (Parkinson) Spain, his daughter Michelle Spain-Allen, son-in-law, Dennis Allen, grandson, Martin Allen and two siblings Barbara Turner and Dorothy Imogene Jenkins, as well as a host of nieces, and nephews, cousins and friends.



A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Thursday October 19th, at St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church, 56 Elmwood Ave, Montclair, with an interment to follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Upper Montclair. The Wake will be held on Wednesday from 5 pm – 7:30 pm at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove St, Montclair. Caggianomemorial.com
