Obituary for Winifred Collins

Winifred Collins, MA, RD passed away on February 24th 2018. Winnie developed the Dietetic Technology Program at Middlesex County College in Edison NJ in 1980 and served as the Founding Director of the Dietetic Technology Program until her retirement in 1990. Before joining Middlesex County College, Winnie served as a Staff Dietitian at the Halloran Veterans Administration Hospital in Staten Island; the Head Dietitian at the Northport Veterans Administration in Long Island, the Chief Dietitian at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elizabeth, the In-Service Education Dietitian and then the Director of Dietetics at Perth Amboy General Hospital, and an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University Graduate School and Douglass College.

While serving as the Director of Dietetics at Perth Amboy General Hospital, Winnie was instrumental in developing the Perth Amboy General Hospital Dietetic Internship Program at a time when NJ did not have a dietetic internship since World War II. Prior to the Dietetic Internship Program, the only route to the American Dietetic Association professional membership/certification was a 3-year pre-Planned Program that Winnie had developed during her tenure as and In-Service Dietitian at Perth Amboy General Hospital.

Winnie served in many elected and appointed positions for NJDA (now, the New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), including President and Delegate. Winnie was honored as a 50-year member by the American Dietetic Association (now, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics). Predeceased by her husband Hayward, Winnie leaves three sons; Stephen, Mark, and Christopher, and two grandchildren; Alexander, and Sydney, as well as many friends and colleagues, to mourn her loss.
