Obituary for Arthur A Autorino

Arthur Autorino, 97, of Montclair, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at St Joseph Health Care and Rehab Center in the early morning hours of February 27, 2018. Mr. Autorino was born, a first generation American, at home, on Maple Avenue in Montclair, NJ on June 18, 1920, to Josephine and Salvatore Autorino. He graduated from Montclair High School where he was a member of the Bulldog’s track and football teams. Enlisting in the United States Navy during WWII, he became a radioman third class on a PBM patrol plane, searching for enemy submarines in the Atlantic Ocean between South America and Africa. Attached to the headquarters squadron on Fleet Air Wing 16, he had the important job of helping to keep the radio equipment of the squadron’s mariners in first class condition. Crossing the equator earned him recognition as a Trusty Shellback of the Ancient Order of the Deep. As the war was coming to a close, he married the love of his life, Ann Mercadante Autorino, who passed away last year. Their marriage lasted 74 years.

In 1946, he settled his family back in Montclair and joined his father as co-owner of Essex Shoe Repair, a business they ran collectively for over 70 years. In retirement, he volunteered for 15 years at the Immaculate Conception School Cafeteria where his wife was cafeteria manager. He was fun loving and enjoyed laughing and kidding with the students. Art delighted in spending time with his children and with his nieces and nephews who lived next door. He will be remembered for his considerable charm, sense of humor, and out going personality.

Mourning his loss is his loving family: sons Arthur and his wife Georgia, of Eastham, MA, and Robert and his wife Patricia of North Caldwell, NJ; grand children Alexandra Autorino Palek and her husband Paul, Samantha Gogerty and her husband Robert, John Autorino, Molly Autorino Krawczyk and her husband Steven, Amelia Autorino and her fiancé John Simmons, and Jamie Autorino; great grand children Jaden, Jaclyn, Lucas and Nicholas Krawczyk, Quinn and Bryce Palek and Rhea and Trey Gogerty and many nieces and nephews. His son Jack Autorino and brother Ralph Autorino predeceased him.

Visitation will take place on Friday, March 2, from 4:00 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Caggiano Memorial Home, caggianomemorial.com, 62 Grove Street, Montclair. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresa’s of Calcutta - Church of the Immaculate Conception, 30 North Fullerton Ave. Montclair, interment at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Upper Montclair.
