Obituary for Winfield L Parsons IV

Dr. Winfield L. Parsons IV, 62, passed peacefully in his Montclair home Thursday, September 13, 2018, after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Tracy Parsons, his two sons, W. Scott Parsons and Daniel Parsons, his brother and business partner Stephen Parsons, as well as two sisters, Rebecca and Barbara, and many extended family members and dear family friends. He will be forever cherished as a loving husband, father, friend and mentor.

Dr. Winfield Parsons will be celebrated on Sunday, September 16, from 1-5 p.m. at Caggiano Memorial Home, 62 Grove Street in Montclair. Caggianomemorial.com Services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 153 Grove Street in Montclair on Monday, September 17, at 11 a.m.

Dr. Parsons enjoyed a lengthy tenure at Montclair State University as an esteemed Associate Professor, spanning 40 years. Dr. Parsons served in a myriad of leadership roles beyond the classroom at MSU, including student and academic advisement and department committees. He extended himself tirelessly to his students both in and out of the classroom. He cherished these relationships; maintaining friendships with many after graduation and beyond. As a young academic, Dr. Parsons earned his Ph.D. at Texas A & M University (Gig ’em Aggies), and remained a loyal alumnus, championing their football team and academic programs throughout his life.

Dr. Winfield Parsons was an exemplary leader in Montclair’s local Boy Scout community encouraging and mentoring many kids to better themselves to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed all things cars, motorcycles, and boats, the outdoors, reading, book club and appreciated a good glass of wine or whiskey, but mostly his family and friends. A true Renaissance man, Dr. Parsons traveled extensively to places near and far, with the Jersey Shore holding a special place in his heart. He loved science, knowledge and learning. He pursued his curiosity constantly. He knew something about everything, engaging in conversation without pretense, lovingly referred to as “Win’s Fun Facts”. He was a European car enthusiast, yet preserved his dirt biking aptitude in keeping with his Pennsylvania roots.

A familiar face around town, Dr. Parsons established Parsons Cabinetry in 1988, bringing an exquisite aesthetic into countless homes, businesses, and public spaces for over 30 years, a legacy his family will continue with pride and expertise.
