His Excellency Mr. Fantaye Woldeyohannes Belaineh was born to his parents Mr. Woldeyohannes Belaineh and Mrs. Abebech Zelibanos on December 24, 1926, in the Gedam Sefer district of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After completing his elementary and secondary education in Addis Ababa, Ramallah, and Beirut, Mr. Fantaye received in 1950 a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Toronto, Canada. Upon his return to Ethiopia, Mr. Fantaye served in various departments of the imperial government with great dedication and distinction.
At the time of the 1974 military coup in the country, Mr. Fantaye was removed from his position as Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, and was imprisoned for seven years with numerous colleagues. After his release from political detention, he devoted many years to extensive research on Ethiopian history and subsequently published two books on the subject.
His Excellency Mr. Fantaye wed in 1957 Mrs. Yeshimebet Habtemichael, with whom he shared an exemplary, happy life spanning some sixty-one years, raising five children: Mulushoa Daniel, Senait Fantaye, Tedenek Fantaye, Manalebish Fantaye, and Metasebia Assefa. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Bethel Tesfaye, Ambaye Michael Tesfaye, Adam Taye Zerihoun, Samra Taye Zerihoun, Hannah Taye Zerihoun, Aida Taye Zerihoun, Abel Mesfin, and Kidus Mesfin.
