In tribute to Winfield, we would like to share this story that speaks to the quintessential Winfield. He was always curious, inquisitive and enthusiastic. Many years ago I saw him one morning looking like he had face-planted. Among the cuts, scrapes and bruises, there was a huge smile on his face. He proceeded to tell me a crazy story about how he had been contracted to test an early Segway model. As he was riding along a road at dusk, he was suddenly and violently tripped, up and over the handlebars, landing face first on the pavement. Apparently, a resident of the road had laid a hose from one side of the street to the other in order to water a newly planted street tree across from his home. Just as Win was approaching, the man pulled on the hose, raising it a foot or two in the air! The next morning, Win was already looking back on the ordeal with amusement. His passing is a huge loss to the community; we will never forget his indomitable spirit.
