Obituary for Carmella Martino

Carmella (Schillaci) Martino of Cedar Grove NJ passed away peacefully on January 6th, 2019, as she approached her 99th birthday surrounded by her family. Visitation will be at 9 am - 10:30am on Wednesday January 9, 2019 at Caggiano Memorial 62 Grove Street, Montclair. A funeral Mass will be immediately following at 11am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on 94 Pine St., Montclair, with entombment following at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Upper Montclair.

Born at home in Montclair on February 24, 1920. Her patron Saint was St. Sebastian and the Feast of St. Sebastian was one of her favorite times of the year since she was a little girl. She watched the Saint be carried out each year for her entire life including this past August. Carmella will be remembered as a caring Matriarch with a generous spirit and profound love for her family. She was an avid Yankee fan and a seamstress by trade who always offered a helping hand to repair garments for friends and family. Her entrepreneurial side loved making cobbler aprons and she also created and sold her own silverware holders, she even offered her services to repair pillows and a blanket for a celebrity. In addition to her creative mind her attention to detail and retention of events and times could not be matched by others. A baker who loved to share recipes and Italian cookies for friends and familys always found making chicken cutlets, eggplant parmesan or tripe for those that desired her cooking. She adored her cousins and always kept in touch sharing recipes of pizzagaina.

She married the love of her life, Leonard Martino of Newark, N.J., who predeceased her in 2004. Her parents, Antonio and Christina, siblings, Tony, Katie, and Ben all predeceased her. Surviving are her two children, Len Martino and Suzanne Bennett of Oldwick, N.J., and her daughter, Nancy and Joe Barbary of Cedar Grove and her only granddaughter, Kristie Wieland of Denver, Colo. She was proud to be an aunt to her siblings' children whom she guided after the death of their parents - Tony’s children, Anthony and Ximena and Annette and her daughter, Courtney, who was very special to her and her husband, Chris; Katie’s children, Carolyn, Linda and her husband, Steve, and Kathy. Her sister-in- law, Lucille Marino who was like a sister to her, was married to Joe who also predeceased her, and her nieces and nephews, Joseph and Cindy, Linda and her husband, Vincent Mascara, John and Karen, and Jimmy and Chris. Her brothers-in-law, Michael and Ralph and his wife, Grace, also predeceased her. Their children, Ralph and Maria, survive Carmella as well as Leonard’s only living brother, Sammy and Judy and their children, Michael and Tammy.

She lived a full life surrounded by all that loved her. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the St. Sebastian Society, PO B0X 640, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
