Obituary for James W "Dippy" Venezia
James Venezia, 64, of Verona, formerly of Montclair, passed away on Tuesday January 8, 2019. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Monday, January 14, at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Verona, with an interment at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Upper Montclair. Visiting will be on Sunday, January 13, from 3-7pm at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove St, Montclair. Caggianomemorial.com.
James was predeceased by his father, Elmer, and mother, Katie. He is survived by his two brothers, Robert and Jack, sisters-in-law, Pat and Helen, and a niece, Katie.
James, a devout Catholic, attended Mass and received the Eucharist on a daily basis. He also had a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother and was an ardent advocate for our unborn innocents.
James attended Immaculate Conception High School from 1968-1972 and received his baccalaureate degree in mathematics from Montclair State College in 1977. After he graduated from MSC, he went on to work at Prudential. He was a computer systems analyst there for 25 years.
As a young boy, “Dip” always enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball and basketball. “Dip” had various volunteer coaching positions while he was studying at MSC and afterwards. In the mid 1970’s, he was the CYO boys’ basketball coach for Immaculate Conception grammar school, and, a few years later, he assisted his high school coach, Joe Lennon, with the ICHS baseball program. From 1977-1982, “Dip” joined his brother, Jack, as an assistant coach with the James Caldwell Post #185 American Legion baseball team. In 1977 and ’78, Post #185 won back to back New Jersey state titles, and in 1978, “Dip” and Jack led their baseball team to the Mid-Atlantic Championship and a 3rd Place finish in the ’78 American Legion World Series in Yakima, Washington. After an absence from coaching for a number of years due to work schedule constraints, “Coach V” became an assistant baseball coach at Montclair Kimberley Academy when asked by his long-time friend, Ralph Pacifico. “Dip” was actively engaged as an assistant coach and an advance scout at MKA for over 15 years.
After the death of James’s father, Elmer, in 1999, James undertook the responsibility of providing and caring for his beloved mother, Katie, who was deceased in January, 2018.
