Obituary for Marjory Chavies
Marjory Frances Smith Chavies, daughter of the late George Grigsby Smith and Margaret Ella (Robinson), entered into eternal life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 7, 2019.
Marjory, affectionately known as “Margie” to friends and family, was born on July 24, 1920 and was a lifelong resident of Montclair, New Jersey. The third of four children, Margie was predeceased by her brother, Herman Smith, and sister, Dorothy Tascoe.
A member of the Montclair High School graduating class of 1938, Margie developed fast friendships while excelling at athletics and participating in a variety of sports during her formative years, most notably as part of the women’s basketball league at the Montclair YWCA.
Margie married her high school sweetheart, Isaac “Ike” Chavies, on June 12, 1944 while Ike served overseas as a Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Armed Forces. Not one to sit idle, Margie supported the war effort working in the Munitions Division at the Picatinny Arsenal, located in Morris County, New Jersey.
Margie and Ike’s union resulted in the birth of four children: Glenna, Michael, Leslie and Brian. She took naturally to motherhood and was a devoted and supportive mother. Passing along her love of learning and athletics to her children, she avidly encouraged and followed each of their endeavors, attending as many cheerleading events, football, basketball games and swim meets as possible, all the while making sure that all homework was completed in a timely fashion. As anyone who knew her would attest, she loved her children and reveled in their accomplishments.
During the 1970’s, she took a job with the NJ Bell Telephone Company in Montclair as an installation coordinator. She loved her job and remained a valued employee there for 16 years.
In the 1980s, Margie moved from her Forest Street home, the place of her birth, and started a new chapter in life at the recently opened South End Gardens Senior Building, also in Montclair. She quickly immersed herself in the community, serving as an early president of the Tenant’s Association while cementing enduring friendships. She loved the Lord and was a lifelong member of the St. Paul Baptist Church, participating in weekly Bible Study in the South End Gardens community room and receiving Holy Communion up until the time of her passing.
Margie departs leaving with fond memories and heavy hearts: her sister, Annie Bee Smith; four children: Glenna Boggs of West Orange, New Jersey, Michael Chavies of Miami, Florida, Leslie Chavies of Cliffwood, New Jersey and Brian Chavies of Jersey City, New Jersey; her beloved son-in-law, Otis Boggs, and daughter-in-law, Pamela Chavies; three grandchildren: Lisa Boggs-Layton (Stewart), Jason Boggs (Sharda) and Chance Chavies; two great-grandchildren, Torry Boggs and Kyndall Boggs. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends.
The family extends its sincere thanks to the Emergency Room and MICU staff of the Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center for their thoughtful and compassionate care during our mother’s final days.
