Obituary for Trevor Roy Spence

Celebration of Life of Trevor Roy Spence, O.D.

Trevor Roy Anthony Spence was born on August 10, 1932 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, to the proud parents of Charles and Irene Spence. Trevor was the fourth child of four in this union. Trevor was formally educated at Cornwall College, Montego Bay, Jamaica, West Indies and attended Brooklyn College, Brooklyn New York. He was formally married to Audrey Fagan and was blessed with two children Gregory and Paula from this union. He also married beloved Ianthe Hilda Davis and they were together for over 50 years. He was a devoted husband, father, family man, friend, and confidant. He enjoyed traveling and special moments with his family and friends.
Trevor was also known by the majority of people he came in contact with as Mr. Spence.
Trevor had an extraordinary and exemplary career. He was a Real Estate Broker for approximately 60 years. He was president of Nostrand Travel Bureau, Inc., a minority owned enterprise, founded and operated by him for over 50 years. He was hard working dedicated professional who believed in community involvement. He was a former board member and secretary of the Bedford Stuyvesant Real Estate Board, for over 20 years. He helped to improve the inner-city housing conditions. His community activities were varied and represent his concern for others as evidenced by his many organizational commitments. In addition, he was also Board Member of Brooklyn Mental Health Association, Inc., Kiwanis of Crown Heights, Advocate of Independent Travel Agents, 100 Black Men Inc., Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute for Children, Inc. A Founder and Past President of Cornwall College Association/New York and remained a member of the Cornwall College Old Boy Association. Also founder of the Caribbean Fiesta/Brooklyn Mental Health Association, Inc.
Trevor was acclaimed on numerous occasions in the Travel Business, he received awards from: Advocates of Independent Travel Agents, The Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute for Children, Inc. A business achievement award from the New York Urban League, Brooklyn Branch. The Brooklyn Club of the National Association of Business and Professional Women Club, Inc. The Women’s League of Science and Medicine Inc., Jamaica National Guild, and the “Man of the Year” Award from the Bedford Branch of the YMCA. In addition, he was awarded the Order of Distinction of England for Cultural Relations-Jamaica. He was the Treasurer of the Election Committee for Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Women from Brooklyn, New York elected into Congress.
He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end.
Trevor transitioned from this life to be with our Lord on May 27, 2019. Honoring his memory are his surviving family, wife Ianthe, his children Gregory and Paula, several nephews, nieces and cousins. He is the last sibling of Cora, Tony, Reginald, that preceded him. In-laws Gladys Van Heyningen, Shermain, Wallace Davis, Dean and Trevor Davis, Octavio Van Heyningen. Not forgetting Orlean Williams manager of his still existing business Nostrand Travel Bureau, Inc., and countless friends.

Visiting hours Wednesday June 5th from 2-6pm at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove St., Montclair, the funeral service will begin at 4pm. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the National Heart. Lung and blood Institute, www.nhlbi.nih.gov would be appreciated.
