Obituary for Corrado Gigante

Corrado Gigante, aged 71 years, passed away on February 12, 2020 surrounded by his family. He died after a courageous battle with kidney cancer.

Corrado was born on February 11, 1949 to Lazzaro and Francesca (nee Altamura) in Molfetta, Italy. The family emigrated to the U.S. when he was 8 years old. Corrado graduated from Hoboken High School in 1967 and was the first person in his family to graduate college when he graduated Rutgers University-Newark in 1971. After 30 years, Corrado returned to Rutgers-Newark to obtain his Masters in Public Administration, later becoming an adjunct professor for that department.While an undergrad, Corrado was a founding brother of the Alpha Delta Mu fraternity. The brothers, especially Buster, Spud, Magoo, and Unkie (deceased) remained close over the years and celebrated 50 years of friendship in 2018.Corrado had a love for Rutgers and was actively involved in the Rutgers-Newark Alumni Association, having served as president and on the board. He received the BlockR Award for his years of service and was a founding organizer of the Rutgers-Newark Golf Outing. Corrado worked for the Human Rights Commission, was the director ofthe U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Newark office, and spent over 25 years as the director of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s Newark office.Corrado and his wife Mary moved from Newark to Glen Ridge, NJ in 1979, where they lived for 39 years. He was active in his community, especially with the Kiwanis Club for which he served as president, on numerous committees, and helped to found the Glen Ridge Octoberfeast. In 2018, Corrado and Mary moved to Canal Walk in Somerset, NJ.

Corrado was predeceased by his parents, his brother Peter Gigante, and his sisters Rose DeGennaro and Vincenza Petruzzella. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary (nee Outwater), his daughter Diane and her husband Chris Geveke, his son David, his son Robert and his wife Lauren, his cherished grandsons Ryan and Ethan Geveke, his brother Cosmo and his wife Maria, his brother Andrew and his wife Joanne, sister Marta Piccininni, sister-in-law Carol Gigante, brothers-in-law Lenny DeGennaro, James Outwater and his wifeAnne, and Michael Outwater
