Obituary for Louis Luibil

Louis Luibil Jr. a lifelong resident of Montclair passed away on April 7, 2020 at the age of 89. In his early days Lou worked as a soda jerk at Grunnings’ in Montclair a job which he told me he loved. He also told me about painting churches in Pennsylvania. He served in the Korean war in 1954 and joined the Montclair Fire Department and retired at the rank of deputy chief in 1983 .

Louis was very active in organizing the Fourth of July parade and the formation of the Sparkettes after retiring from the fire department, then worked at Peoples Bank as a business developer and manager in the mid-80s.
He was appointed by the Governor Tom Kean to serve a New Jerseys first State Fire Marshal in the division of fire safety, where he was instrumental in having fire alarms installed in ever home in NJ, also serving as the director of emergency management for Essex County and as an aid to County freeholders Art Clay and Joe Scarpelli
He was a lifelong member of the Montclair YMCA and the Saint Sebastian club in Montclair, the Lions club for 51 years , where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, the Highest award given by the Lions Club He also served in the Montclair 100 Club, American Legion and was a board member of the American Red Cross. He was also a member of the career retired Fire Chiefs Association. Louis was predeceased by his wife of 61 years Julie (nee Adams) and by his parents Louis and Anna Luibil (nee Petronaci) and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son Louis III, his daughter Deborah and her fiancé Anthony Rizzolo, grandsons Michael Luibil, Danny Luibil and his wife Stephanie and Spencer Bashall, two great grandsons Hadan and Kellan Luibil and a host of family and friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date.
