Obituary for Chiara D'Agostino

Chiara Alice D’Agostino, 48, of Montclair, New Jersey, passed away on August 4, 2020. Born October 25, 1971 in Montclair, Chiara was the youngest daughter of Carmela D’Agostino and the late Pasquale D’Agostino and sister to Mary and Michael D’Agostino.

She graduated from Montclair High School in 1989 and attended SUNY New Paltz where she received a Bachelors of Arts in dance. She worked in the service industry and in education before returning to school to earn her Master’s Degree in Italian Culture from Middlebury College in 2014. Chiara loved studying and teaching Italian, and in both college and graduate school she spent a full year studying abroad in Florence. From a young age she delighted in the freedom and adventure of travel, and many of her happiest memories were spent as a young child in her parents’ hometown of Lacedonia, Italy.

Shortly after completing her Master’s Degree, Chiara was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer which later metastasized. She began writing about her experiences on her blog, Beauty Through the Beast, where she offered an uncensored account of her battle against cancer. After her double mastectomy she walked the runway of New York Fashion Week for the lingerie brand AnaOno and began a career in modeling with appearances in Oprah Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and a Dove campaign. Her platform also led to a new calling in patient and health care advocacy as she pushed for the expansion of Medicaid in New Jersey and the protection of the Affordable Care Act in Washington, D.C. Through both her modeling and advocacy work her followers were inspired by her strength, bravery, and honesty.

Chiara spent her last weeks in her sister’s home in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey and passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her mother, sister, and brother as well as her five nieces, Melinda Taylor, Roxana Wells, Veronica Lee, Jessica Lee, and Carina Lee, her nephew Michael P. D’Agostino, seven grandnephews, and one grandniece.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 8 at 10 o’clock in the morning at St. Cassian Church in Montclair and will be livestreamed on Facebook. A virtual shiva will also be held on Thursday, August 9 at 6:30 in the evening via Zoom.
