Loving and Devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather

Anthony Charles Acocella, 82, of Montclair, NJ, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday December 2, 2020. Anthony was a lifelong resident of Montclair, the son of the late Joseph Nicholas Acocella and Marion Rose (Luinetti) Acocella.

Anthony graduated from Montclair High School in 1955. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1961 after serving two years active duty in France with 547 Ordinance Company and earning a good conduct medal, two years active reserve, and two years inactive reserve. In 1975, Anthony earned a B.A. in Psychology from Montclair State College.

Anthony’s life revolved around his family. He worked two full time jobs for 20 years to provide for his wife and six children. His spare time was devoted to helping his children with homework, taking them on fishing trips, and teaching them how to be responsible, hardworking members of the community. During his retirement, he was able to spend more time with his family, walk his dogs, and pursue his favorite pastime, FISHING.

Anthony was a man of courage and strength. He was a member of the Montclair Police Department for 25 years (Sergeant for 11) helping the citizens of Montclair on and off duty. During a family trip to Sandy Hook beach, Anthony rescued three children on a raft who were caught in a riptide out in the ocean.

Anthony will be greatly missed by his loving wife Cecilia, his six children Joseph, Laura (DeeDee), Cecilia, Marina, Therese (Tessie) and Antonio (Tony), and his grandchildren, Benjamin, Joseph, Andrew, Daniel, Margaret, Victor, Sophia and Jack.

There will be a public viewing for Anthony at Caggiano Memorial funeral home in Montclair from 3:00-7:00 on Friday December 4. A funeral mass will be held for Anthony at 10:00 on Saturday December 5 at Immaculate Conception, Parish of St. Theresa of Calcutta, Montclair.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Theresa of Calcutta Parish, 1 Munn St., Montclair, NJ.
