Obituary for Nicole Bynum

Nicole Bynum was a loving mother, grandmother, sister to her cousins, and Auntie to those who looked up to her. She was born Nicole Tournesy, an only child of parents Henri Laguerre and Nina Tournesy in Port-au-Prince Haiti, on June 10, 1949. Her Aunt Anne Tournesy raised her after losing her mother at a young age. In her early 20’s, she got married, moved to the United States to start a new life in Florida, and ultimately relocated to New Jersey to be closer to her extended family. Those closest to her knew her beautiful soul inside and out. She was strong-willed, very spiritual, opinionated, and above all, a fighter. Her fighting spirit was a quiet one, but stealth.

Those who knew her knew she worried for the well-being of her children, and constantly guarded their happiness, and put them first. She has been through adversity to sustain a better life for herself and her family. As a divorced mother, she worked tirelessly to support her sons and create a safe home. She did the best she could with everything she did out of love and good intention. She loved her family and helped them willingly. She worked at Mountainside Hospital, Continental Airlines, and most recently at Elizabeth City Hall. After retiring in 2019, she chose to live a simple life.

On October 7, 2021, she passed away after a long recovery from an aneurysm in April. She is survived by her three sons: George Jr., Patrick, and Jeff, and her six grandchildren, Michelle, Cameron, Aaron, Madison, Kha’mora, and Gelani, and loved by many of her cousins, some of who were like nieces & nephews to her, and dear friends. We will remember her laughter and sense of humor. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her sons, and her grandchildren will know her name through family stories, photos, and in spirit.

Nicole will be laid to rest at Rosedale Cemetery in Montclair, New Jersey, on October 15, 2021. We will miss her. Thank you for being here to usher her out of this physical world and into her rightful place among the angels.
