Obituary for Apolinaria Toledo

Apolinaria Toledo Abad

“La roca de la familia”

Apolinaria Toledo Abad, 98, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 22 at the Job Haines nursing home in Bloomfield New Jersey.

Affectionately called Pola, she was born on August 13, 1924 in Chulucanas, Perú to parents Jose Maria Toledo and Antonia Abad.

At the age of 16 years old, Pola moved to Lima, Peru where she studied and began working to support her family.

In 1955 Pola migrated to the United States, beginning her journey in Houston Texas, where she obtained her license in cosmetology in 1959.

Pola established her legacy as the first of a large family rooted in Peru to arrive in the states. Her leadership laid the foundation for the arrival of her sisters to the US and the thriving family that followed.

Education and achieving the "American dream" was important to Pola. Not only did she achieve that dream through financial success, but she never forgot where she came from and continued to live a modest lifestyle, helping friends and family when she could.

Eventually Pola moved to NJ and purchased a home in Bloomfield. Proud of her ability to learn and speak english proficiently, she continued her education and obtained her high school diploma in 1977. Pola believed in hard work and dedication and expected nothing less from those that she loved.

As a devout Catholic, Pola attended church regularly and volunteered in her community. She also had a deep love of animals, and always had a dog by her side.

Pola is survived by her three sisters, and a host of nieces and nephews. She will especially be remembered for her benevolence and fiery spirit that served to strengthen everyone she met.

Pola will be missed, but her memory will forever be in our hearts.
