Obituary for Gregorio Amilcar Prado

Gregorio Amilcar Prado
Don Amilcar was born in Leon, Nicaragua on March 25, 1951 to the late Blas A. Prado
and Neptalia Leon.  He was one of twenty brothers and sisters. They grew up as one
big family all in Nicaragua.
Gregorio met Teresa, his beloved wife of 51 years at the age of seventeen and married
his sweetheart in 1971. Their love gave birth to their two children: Amilcar Benito Prado
(known as Fr Benny) and Eliveth Mercedes Edwards, as well as three
grandchildren, Kasey, Joshua and Emily, whom they adored.
Don Amilcar and his family emigrated from Nicaragua to the United States in the late
1980’s. Settling in the Bronx when he was 38 years old, he worked only one job in the
USA. Coronet Machinery in Yonkers until his retirement. At work he was affectionately
known as Gregorio el “gordo”.  He took the chiding with a great big smile.
Gregorio loved to play softball and was one of the biggest New York Yankee fans you’d
ever know. His wife always jokingly said that the only thing that would separate her from
her husband was a Yankee game. Gregorio also loved to cook. If you visited him at their
home in Hackensack, he would always feed you, and you had to eat, hungry or not!
Gregorio and Teresa traveled the world together. He loved to visit his native country; but
only for about two weeks. He always said I am an American, that’s my country. He was
very honored and grateful to live in the USA and made the best of every opportunity.
Gregorio was very proud of his children becoming American citizens and being the first
generation that attended college, both graduating with masters' degrees. His love and
sacrifice pushed them to become professionals and instilled in them the value of giving
back.
Gregorio was a man of faith and prayer was part of his daily life. He and his wife prayed
the Rosary together every day, and attended daily Mass. The love he displayed for his
wife was joyous every day and lasted to his last breaths.  They were an inseparable
pair. In April of this year they would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
Gregorio is best described by his children in this poem by Karen Boyer:
DAD
He never looks for praises
He's never one to boast
He just goes on quietly working
For those he loves the most
His dreams are seldom spoken
His wants are very few
And most of the time his worries
Will go unspoken too
He's there . .. A firm foundation
Through all our storms of life

A sturdy hand to hold to
In times of stress and strife
A true friend we can turn to
When times are good or bad
One of our greatest blessings,
The man that we call Dad.
May he rest in peace and enjoy the blessings of the Lord's Resurrection!
