Obituary for Amy Harrison

Our beloved Amy Ernestine Harrison was called to rest on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
Born March 16, 1934 in Mullins, South Carolina. She was born to the late Louis and
Louise Dorsey. She was the youngest sibling to two brothers and two sisters.
During the 1950’s Amy migrated from the South to New Jersey along with her mother and
siblings. Growing up in Jersey City, she graduated from Lincoln High School and later
attended Upsala College in East Orange, NJ.
Amy married Donald Harrison on January 19, 1957 and from that union were born Kim,
Donna, and Jeffrey.
Amy graduated from Upsala College with a degree in Counseling, concentration in Special
Education. She embraced the challenge of educating and empowering students who had
learning, mental, emotional or physical disabilities. Her work became her personal ministry
and lifelong mission. Her older sister (Edith Hurt) encouraged her to participate in the
Teacher Corp Program that later certified her in teaching. After being hired by the East
Orange School District, she faithfully served as a consummate and compassionate teacher
for 33 years. She retired from teaching June 2011.
Amy loved the Lord and accepted Jesus Christ at a young age and she was diligent about
making sure that Kim, Donna and Jeffery learned what it meant to grow a relationship with
Christ at a young age. It was a very familiar sight to walk past her bedroom and find her on
her knees before going to bed. She attended several churches in Montclair including
Finishers Church, Joy Miniseries, Christ Church and lastly Kingdom Fellowship Church.
Amy was passionate and committed to Sisterhood. Accordingly, she became a founding
member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Montclair Chapter (Omicron Xi Omega)
in June 30, 1984.
Preceded by her husband, Donald, her mother and father, Louis and Louise Dorsey, siblings
