I'm not sure when I knew Kathy Handley knew me and it was probably my stint with The Montclair Times that our paths crossed, even though we lived on Inwood Ave. for some 40 years.
No matter when I saw Kathy, she always had a warm welcome and something nice to say. As Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, that was a welcoming reward. I didn't think I mattered in the scheme of things but Kathy always made me feel as if I had the most important job in the world and that I was the best choice of any candidates who might have had that position.
One day I walked in Keil's Pharmacy to pick up some Flu medicine. I felt horrible..... one of those days you don't want to run into anyone you know. Kathy was there and greeted me with her warm and welcoming coments and said " you look so cute in that hat, here, let me take your picture". Before I could protest, she had her camera out and snap, snap , snap was clicking away as if she had just run into John Lennon. How can you not feel good after an encounter like that???? I cherished our relationship and The Friends of Barnet events that Kathy imagined and the rest of us caugt up in the vision made happen! The events were always spectacular and always involving entertainment and famous performers. I am a richer and better persoon for having been even tangent to her circles!
