Obituary for Arthur R Ellenberger

Arthur R Ellenberger
Arthur R. Ellenberger, 89 WWII Veteran

Former Medical Executive for many Associations

Mr. Arthur R. Ellenberger succumbed on Tuesday July 28th surrounded by loved ones at home. He was the first Executive Director of the Essex County Medical Society from July 1952-August 2008. He was also the first Executive Director of the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons from 1962-2005. Both of these organizations elected him to honorary membership.

Arthur Ellenberger was born in Jersey City and served in a line combat regiment in WWII (86th Infantry) in Europe. He was a decorated combat infantryman. After VE day he was transferred to the Pacific theatre and spent 14 months in the Philippines. Arthur received a BA degree from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City in 1950. His Graduate studies were from NYU and Columbia University. In 1956 he married Anna Lee Gilbert of Elizabethton, Tennessee. Anna worked for Merrill Lynch, and they resided in Bloomfield NJ for over 50 years. Mr. Ellenberger worked in the current events library of Time-Life-Fortune magazine in 1951. During his military service he was under General George Patton and in civilian life served publisher Henry Luce. He supplied development and managerial services to many associations—all of them composed of practicing Physicians. His experience aided non-profit associations and constitutional requirements, parliamentary procedures, convention management, and developing clinical and socioeconomic continuing medical education symposia for practicing professionals.
Arthur claimed he was in the information business. His timely action often required on pending legislation and proposed regulations, pertinent medical practice confirms this.

Many Physicians throughout the State of New Jersey know him for his reports on the American Medical Association as well as other national meetings. His articles have appeared in publication of both the American Medical Society and the American College of Surgeons. He has been presented with the honor of prestigious awards from AMA and the ACS.

He loved sailing, fishing, and exploring tropical reefs. His sense of humor and ability to tell a joke are legend. He had an outstanding career and is highly respected by the Physicians of New Jersey and the United States.

Visitation will be on Friday July 31st from 3-7pm at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove Street, Montclair NJ. www.caggianomemorial.com
He is survived by his wife Anna Lee (nee Gilbert), and his brother Donald Ellenberger and his children.
