George Charles Strand, 84, died on January 5, 2017 at his Cedar Grove, NJ home. Mr. Strand was born in Montclair to parents George and Lauretta Strand, proprietors of the popular local tavern that bore the family name. A graduate of NYU with a degree in Journalism, Mr. Strand served in South Korea with the US Army, where he wrote extensively for the Pacific “Stars and Stripes”, serving as editor of I Corps newspaper at Uijeongbu, South Korea. He entered the family business upon his return, providing a place for neighbors to meet and socialize. Later, Mr. Strand was a sales representative at Jaydor Corporation until his retirement. He married Ann (nee Thompson) in 1956, forging a loving home in Clifton for more than 40 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two children, George C. Strand, Jr. and Audrey E. Dean, son in law Jack Dean, and two grandchildren, Julia and Evan Dean, as well as a host of beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Strand was a lifelong fan of music and a supporter of live performances. His tastes ranged from the “Great American Songbook” of the 1950’s to competitive high school, college marching bands and drum corps, as well as regularly attending concerts of the Montclair Community Band. One of Mr. Strand’s most fondly remembered accomplishments was serving as trip chairman of the Clifton High School band’s participation in the 1980 Harrogate International Youth Festival of Music in England. Known at Montclair High School as the “walking sports encyclopedia”, Mr. Strand coached Clifton Little League baseball teams, officiated high school basketball and was a lifelong fan of the New York Giants and New York Yankees.
A celebration of his life will be held at Caggiano Memorial Home for Funerals, 62 Grove Street in Montclair on Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 2:00-4:00. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Strand encourages donations to Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children, 410 E. 92nd St., New York, NY 10128
