Obituary for Jon Schiau

Jon Schiau
Jon Schiau passed away on November 1, 2016 after living a fulfilling life. He was born on September 29, 1928, to Peter and Lucretia Schiau in Romania. He was the sole male sibling of three sisters, survived by his youngest sister Miora. Jon was the devoted husband of Dorothy Schiau, married 63 years prior to her passing. Jon was the loving father of Ross (his wife, Bonnie) and Vladimir (his wife, Brenda). He is also survived by his beloved grand-daughters, Nicole and Melissa.

After beginning his professional career as a petroleum engineer in Romania, he married the love of his life, Dorothy, on April 27, 1952. They became loving parents to their 2 sons, Ross and Vladimir. In order to provide his family with the best possible lives and opportunities, he courageously and creatively found a way to emigrate from Romania and eventually, with the help of friends, arrived in the United States in 1971. He continued working as a petroleum engineer for Foster Wheeler for many years thereafter, eventually retiring and then he and Dorothy became successful business owners.

Although he traveled far and wide to move this family to the US, Jon always kept in touch with his Romanian roots and community. He was a distinguished member of St. Dumitru Romanian Orthodox church, where he served as President of the Church Council for several years and volunteered his services wherever needed. Some might even remember him dressed as Santa Clause on Christmas at the church providing cheer and good times to all.

His and Dorothy's immense passion for international travel kept them busy throughout their lives, as did their love of entertaining with family and friends. He was always up for a friendly political debate or discussion. Jon’s empathy and benevolent nature paid it forward by providing other families guidance when they needed help leaving Romania and starting their new lives in the US.

Jon will always be loved and remembered as the patriarch of the Schiau family. He paved the way for his family's success and led by example. Jon’s qualities of integrity, accountability, and humor made him endearing to nearly all persons he met. He leaves behind a family who were honored and blessed to have known and been touched by him. He will be truly missed, remembered, cherished and celebrated.

Jon’s memorial service will be held at a future date and time. Please check with family members for details.
