Obituary

It is with sadness and love we say goodbye to Francis (Frank) Burroughs, 61, who died on January 9, 2020 in Springfield MA. Frank was a unique individual who embraced life and the people he met. He was raised in Montclair, NJ where he attended Rand and Hillside Schools, later graduating from Montclair High. He moved to Massachusetts soon after high school where he earned a nursing degree and began his career working with developmentally disabled adults until his retirement, but returned ‘home’ often to visit family and friends. Among the many things he will be remembered for was his ability to easily make friends, his wit and humor, love of reggae music, the Grateful Dead, and his dreadlocks. He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Catherine, and leaves behind to celebrate his life, his sister Lavinia, brother George, sister-in-law Greer, niece Kamaryn, nephews, Kevin, Grant, and Garrett, former wife, but life-long friend, Jennifer Dugan, many relatives and countless friends. Memorial and celebration of life will be held on Jan. 25 at 11:00am, The Commonwealth Club, 26 Northview Avenue, Upper Montclair, NJ. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI.org.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Frank's passing. Though I hadn't spoken to Frank in some years, we go far back together. In fact, I am the person in the background of Frank's photograph. The photo was taken by Allen Ginsberg in his apartment on East 12th St in NYC October 7, 1985. Frank helped me land my first job after graduating from UMass in 1985; we worked together at Cornucopia in Northampton, MA. Later, I visited Frank and Kevin Keady when they lived at Allen Ginsberg's farm in Cherry Valley, NY in 1986. Frank was a wonderful person, gentle, gracious, funny, wise. I cherish the memories I have of him, the times we spent together, the people we knew together. To his friends and family, I send love and condolences. I am grateful to have known Frank, my life is better for it.
